Pretoria North Power Outage: Residents Brace for Three-Day Electricity Shutdown

Pretoria North Power Outage: Residents Brace for Three-Day Electricity Shutdown

Pretoria North residents are preparing for a scheduled three-day power outage this week as the City of Tshwane carries out critical maintenance work on its electrical infrastructure. The outages, affecting large parts of northern Pretoria and surrounding areas, are part of planned upgrades to improve the reliability, safety, and efficiency of the power supply network. The maintenance will take place from Tuesday, June 18, to Thursday, June 20, 2025.

According to the City of Tshwane’s statement, the maintenance will involve technical audit testing and essential repairs at the Wolmer and K1 substations. These substations supply power to multiple suburbs in the Pretoria North region, and their temporary shutdown is necessary to allow technicians safe access to high-voltage infrastructure.

Affected Areas and Schedule

The first phase of the power outage begins on Tuesday, June 18, when the Wolmer Substation will be taken offline. Power will be interrupted between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday and again on Wednesday, June 19. Suburbs expected to be affected include Wolmer, Ninapark, Theresapark, Eldorette, Clarina, Winternest, Hesteapark, Klerksoord, Heatherdale, parts of Dorandia, and the BVN 45 line.

The second phase will affect residents connected to the K1 Substation on Thursday, June 20, also between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Suburbs expected to experience power cuts include Soshanguve Blocks VV, WW, XX, and those along the BVN 176 line.

The City has emphasized that these outages are preemptive, controlled, and vital for the long-term health of the electrical grid. Municipal spokesperson Lindela Mashigo reassured residents that the power interruptions are not a sign of load shedding or power failure but part of a strategic effort to strengthen the city’s infrastructure.

Context: Recent Substation Damage Raises Concerns

The power grid in Pretoria North has come under increased pressure in recent months, with incidents of vandalism and aging infrastructure sparking concerns among residents. Just weeks ago, the Wolmer substation in Onderstepoort was targeted by vandals, causing an unscheduled power outage that left parts of the region in the dark for hours. This incident has accelerated the need for maintenance and safety audits to prevent future disruptions.

“The recent vandalism incident made it clear that we need to ensure our substations are both technically sound and secure,” said Mashigo. “We are prioritizing work on high-risk substations and have aligned these maintenance efforts with security evaluations.”

The City has stated that a task team has been deployed to assess security vulnerabilities at major substations and implement immediate upgrades where necessary. CCTV installation, fencing enhancements, and security patrols are reportedly being increased.

Broader Impact: Pretoria East Also Hit by Unplanned Outages

In addition to the planned outages in Pretoria North, residents in Pretoria East experienced an unplanned power disruption earlier this week due to a fault at the 132 kV Wapadrand substation. The fault led to power cuts in Wapadrand, Equestria, Silver Lakes, and surrounding suburbs. Technicians have since restored supply to most affected areas, but investigations are ongoing to determine the root cause of the substation trip.

These compounding issues have heightened anxiety among residents citywide. However, city officials are urging calm and emphasizing that proactive maintenance—such as the Wolmer and K1 work—helps prevent future large-scale blackouts.

Resident Reactions: Frustration, Understanding, and Preparation

While some residents have expressed frustration at the inconvenience, others are appreciating the city's transparent communication and proactive maintenance.

“I’m glad they’re telling us in advance. At least we can plan around it,” said Carla Venter, a business owner in Theresapark. “But it’s still frustrating when you run a small business that depends on electricity for everything.”

Local schools and businesses are also bracing for the impact. Some schools have indicated they may switch to remote learning for part of the day or adjust schedules to accommodate the outages.

The City has advised residents to treat all electrical outlets as live during the downtime and to take standard precautions.

Tips for Coping with the Outage

To help residents manage the temporary power cuts, the City of Tshwane and local emergency services have issued several tips:

  • Charge mobile phones and laptops in advance.

  • Keep flashlights and batteries handy.

  • Avoid opening refrigerators and freezers unnecessarily.

  • Unplug sensitive electronics to prevent damage from power surges.

  • Consider investing in a small UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) or backup generator, especially for home businesses or medical equipment.

  • Report any suspicious activity near substations to the Tshwane Metro Police or SAPS.

City’s Assurance and Outlook

City officials have committed to sticking to the outlined maintenance schedule and ensuring that power is restored on time each day.

“The teams on the ground are well-prepared, and the outages will not extend beyond the communicated hours unless unforeseen circumstances arise,” said Mashigo. “This work is a necessary part of strengthening Tshwane’s energy future.”

He also urged residents to remain patient and see the maintenance as a short-term inconvenience with long-term benefits.

As electricity infrastructure across South Africa continues to face challenges from aging systems, theft, and high demand, municipalities like Tshwane are under pressure to balance short-term service delivery with long-term infrastructure investment.

While three days of power cuts are never welcome, the Pretoria North community is being asked to endure them in the hope of a more stable, secure, and efficient power supply in the near future.

The City of Tshwane has made updates available via its official website and social media channels and encourages residents to stay informed by subscribing to local alerts.
